9 AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam Tips That Actually Move Your Score

Most CLF-C02 advice stops at “read the AWS whitepapers.” That's necessary but not sufficient — the exam is as much about handling 65 scenario questions under a 90-minute clock as it is about knowing the material. These are the tips that actually change your score, not just your confidence.

1. Read the last sentence of the question first

CLF-C02 scenarios are often three or four sentences of setup before the actual question. Reading the final sentence first — the one that usually starts with “which service” or “what should the company do” — tells you what to look for while you read the setup, instead of re-reading it once you realize you missed the point.

2. Watch for absolute and qualifying words

Words like always, never, least, most cost-effective, and with the least operational overheadare doing real work in the question. Two answer choices are often both technically correct, but only one satisfies the specific qualifier — usually cost, speed, or operational effort. Skim past that word and you'll pick a “correct but not the best” answer.

3. Eliminate before you select

On four-option questions, at least one choice is almost always obviously wrong — a service that doesn't exist for this use case, or one from a completely unrelated category. Cross those out first. Narrowing four options to two roughly doubles your odds even on a pure guess, and often the remaining two make the real distinction (the qualifier from tip 2) much easier to spot.

4. Budget your 90 minutes deliberately

65 questions in 90 minutes is about 83 seconds per question — but not every question deserves equal time. A rough pacing plan: aim to reach question 33 by the 45-minute mark. If you're behind that pace, you're spending too long on questions you should be flagging and moving past (see tip 5).

5. Flag and move on — don't stall

Pearson VUE's interface lets you flag a question and return to it later. If you don't know an answer within about 60–90 seconds of real thought, flag your best guess and move on. Getting stuck on one hard question at the cost of three easy ones later in the exam is a pure, avoidable point loss.

6. Know the Shared Responsibility Model cold

It is, without exaggeration, the single most-tested concept on CLF-C02 — it shows up directly and hidden inside otherwise unrelated questions about EC2, S3, RDS, and Lambda. Know precisely what AWS secures (“of the cloud”) versus what you secure (“in the cloud”), and how that split shifts for managed versus unmanaged services.

7. Don't skip the Billing domain

Billing, Pricing & Support is only 12% of the exam, and it's the domain most candidates deprioritize because it feels boring. That's exactly why it's high-leverage: the material is narrow (four support tiers, three or four pricing tools, EC2 pricing models) and fast to memorize completely, unlike the sprawling Cloud Technology domain.

8. Simulate real exam conditions at least three times

Doing untimed practice questions builds knowledge. Doing a full, timed, 65-question mock exam — sitting down, no pausing, no looking things up — builds the specific skill of performing under the actual conditions you'll face. Do this at least three times in your final week, on different question sets each time so you're not just memorizing one quiz.

9. The night before, review weak spots — don't cram new material

The night before the exam is for reviewing your personal weak list — the two or three concepts you keep getting wrong in practice — not for opening a whitepaper you haven't read yet. New information the night before rarely sticks and mostly adds anxiety. Sleep matters more than one more hour of passive reading; 90 minutes of sustained focus the next day depends on it.
